California Proposition 65
California Proposition 65 Notice
Last updated: June 12, 2026
What Is Proposition 65?
The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, commonly known as Proposition 65 (Prop 65), is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings to California consumers about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Prop 65 requires the State of California to maintain and update a list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. The list currently includes over 900 chemicals.
Why This Matters for Dietary Supplements
Many foods, dietary supplements, and natural products contain trace amounts of naturally occurring substances that are on the Prop 65 list, including lead, cadmium, and arsenic. These substances can be present in soil, water, and air, and may be absorbed by plants — including mushrooms — during growth.
A Prop 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe. The warning levels set by Prop 65 are often significantly lower than federal safety standards set by the FDA and EPA. Many everyday foods, including spinach, rice, chocolate, and coffee, could require Prop 65 warnings if sold in California.
